Flying Cross Jockey Club
At the Flying Cross Jockey Club, our mission goes beyond cultivating exceptional athletes. We are committed to nurturing well-rounded individuals who embody the values of horsemanship, sportsmanship, and community. While our program hones physical strength and riding expertise, it also instills invaluable life skills that our members carry with them far beyond the racetrack.
Joining the club means embarking on a transformative journey where members not only train to compete but also develop self-confidence, social skills, and public speaking abilities. These qualities are essential for creating ambassadors of the sport—leaders who can share their passion for racing and inspire others.
Becoming a member of the Flying Cross Jockey Club is a significant commitment. Those who reach the level of racing dedicate themselves to riding four to five times per week. But the learning doesn’t stop in the saddle.
Club members take an active role in the care of their horses, performing daily chores and learning the responsibilities of grooming, feeding, and stable management.
This hands-on experience fosters a deep connection with their horses and teaches the value of hard work, dedication, and teamwork.
Our program is about more than racing—it’s about preparing young people for success in every aspect of life.
By blending athletic training with personal development, the Flying Cross Jockey Club shapes confident, compassionate, and capable individuals ready to take on challenges both in and out of the arena.
Whether on the racetrack or in their communities, our members stand tall as champions and role models, representing the heart and spirit of equestrian sports.

Help Keep the Flying Cross Jockey Club Galloping Forward

It takes more than horsepower to run a program like the Flying Cross Jockey Club—it takes heart, commitment, and community support. Our riders and their families dedicate countless hours to training, caring for horses, and preparing for race day. But for many, the financial commitment can be a hurdle.

To get a young rider race-ready, it takes riding 4-5 times per week, which can be a significant expense for families. While Roy's passion for this program drives him to sponsor many lessons himself, the care and feeding of the horses remain a challenge we cannot meet alone.

This is where you come in. By donating a bale—or a few—you can directly support the horses that make this program possible. Your contribution ensures the horses have what they need while helping us continue to provide opportunities for young riders who might not otherwise have access to this life-changing program.

How You Can Help
It’s simple: every bale makes a difference. When you donate, you’re not just feeding a horse—you’re fueling dreams, fostering confidence, and creating opportunities for the next generation of jockeys.

Flying Cross Jockey Club: 2024 Year in Review
What an incredible year it’s been for the Flying Cross Jockey Club! From early prep to unforgettable moments, 2024 kept us on our toes. Here’s a look back at the highlights:

Spring Beginnings:
We kicked off the year getting horses and riders ready for the season. Matching horse-and-rider combinations? Let’s just say it’s part science, part art, and a whole lot of laughs! Early spring, I had the privilege of teaching an exercise clinic at Hearthstone Stables in Manitoba, where two talented girls earned their gallop licenses.
A Legendary Visit:
In May, the legendary Julie Krone came to stay with us for a week. Her presence and wisdom were unforgettable—what an amazing person and friend!
Race Prep & Fun Days:
Gate schooling kids and horses took centre stage as the season ramped up. We held a few fun race days at our place and Lacombe’s old fair track, building skills and creating memories.
Ponoka Stampede:
The Ponoka Stampede was, once again, our biggest event of the year. Racing in front of 12,000 cheering fans every night is an experience we’ll never forget—thank you for having us!
Opening for the WPCA:
We were honoured to open for the WORLD Professional Chuckwagon Association in High River. What an amazing opportunity!
Toronto Adventures:
A highlight of the year was traveling to Woodbine in Toronto. Roy had the chance to gallop a horse there and was invited to outride at the King’s Plate—truly a bucket-list moment! Special thanks to Robbie & Michelle Love, Ian Ross, Martha Wakley, Emma Jane Wilson, Omar Moreno, and many others for making this trip unforgettable.
Maskwacis & Finals in Ponoka:
Thank you, Maskwacis, for having us back again—it’s always a pleasure to work with your incredible team. We wrapped up the racing season by opening every night at the World Professional Chuckwagon Finals in Ponoka.
Community Spirit:
From a Santa Claus Parade in November to visiting seniors' lodges and long-term care facilities in December, we ended the year spreading joy with our riders, ponies, and even some goats!
Thank You:
A huge thank you to all the parents, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who make this possible. Special thanks to Ponoka Stampede, High River Ag Society, Maskwacis, Lacombe Regional Tourism, Woodbine, and the World Professional Chuckwagon Association. To everyone who donated or cheered us on—thank you!
We’re gearing up for another exciting year, with spring training kicking off this Saturday and some new shows on the horizon.
Stay tuned, and here’s to making 2025 even better!
